Shopping in Peterborough

The unique ambience of the downtown core attracts upscale stores, eclectic shops and boutiques. Restoration of 19th century buildings in combination with a ‘Cafe District,’ currently being developed, is making Peterborough an even more attractive and inviting destination to call home. Peterborough’s thriving town centre is bolstered by three enclosed shopping malls and numerous box stores such as Future Shop, Home Depot, Staples, Winners and Chapters. In 2006 Peterborough’s retail sales ranked in the top 10 for Canadian retail sales per capita for populations over 100,000. As sales reached 26% above the national average, Peterborough took eighth place in a Financial Post Market survey.

The small-town feel is enhanced with two weekly outdoor markets. Peterborough Farmer’s Market is open on Saturday mornings (7am – 1pm year round) in Morrow Park beside the Memorial Centre arena and offers a plethora of food and organic produce. The Downtown Country Fare Market runs every Wednesday on Charlotte Street between George Street and Water Street from May to October and inside until Christmas in Peterborough Square. A throwback to the original farmer’s market, held in the downtown market block, this small, high quality market sells only locally grown fruits, vegetables, meats, and handmade crafts.
